Savannah, Georgia: even the name sounds like music, doesn't it? What better place can you imagine as a safe haven a performing entertainer? Whether you are a raw rookie just breaking in, a seasoned trouper dreaming of a place to settle down, or just a bird of passage looking for a spot to stay awhile, play awhile and move on, Savannah offers performers an ideal environment in which to grow and experiment.
This Southern city holds a broad array of supportive elements. The site of the oldest continuously operating live theater in the nation -- The Savannah Theater, founded in 1818 -- the town has nearly two centuries invested in live performing arts. That alone is a unique testament to the level of community appreciation and determined commitment the city and its residents feel towards the living cultural traditions of the world.
So very few American communities have been able to establish a live performance venue at all, much less keep one operating for so long. But Savannah offers more than just a single theater.
Savannah maintains the Savannah College of Arts and Design, with both theater and music programs and a venerable theater of its own, the refurbished Trustee's Theater. The community of artists centered around the college unites both young and old to share in their many performance traditions. The City Market, which is the center of studio space in the city, holds many events throughout the year focusing on the artists in its own community. And then there are the Festivals.
Savannah, after all, is a Southern city, with sweet, warm weather and plenty of sun, and long honeysuckle scented nights. What better place for an ongoing parade of Festivals attracting performers and all the associated agents, producers and others from the world of performing arts?
There is the Music Festival, providing a platform for everything from jazz and blues to good ol' country. The Shakespeare Festival. The Blue Ocean Film Festival…the list goes on, and is constantly growing and changing as new ideas are brought into play.
The city has a lively night-life, too: clubs like The One, restaurants like the Bayou Café. Savannah is well situated on the live performance circuit, allowing an entertainer whose love is touring to maintain a stable place of residence that allows for performance in their own neighborhood while still making it easy to step away and run up the coast or down, to New York and Boston, or to Miami, or over to Louisiana and the recovering city life of the Big Easy, coming back to life a bit at a time in the aftermath of Katrina.
Coffee houses abound, taking advantage of the same circuit patterns, providing venues for a range of performers, from the traditional musicians to performers of all types -- magicians and illusionists, comedians and more.
If you need still broader venues they're there. The presence of swing bands and orchestras, backed up by successful event planning agencies and talent agencies like Moon River Productions provide a base for an incredibly broad array of entertainers.
There are pages of event planners on all levels, from weddings needing live performers, professional receptions needing MCs and music planners, and on the most joyful level of daily life, party planners needing everything from clowns to activity leaders.
The potential available to artists in Savannah is enormous. Just as Ireland became a haven for artists in the seventies and eighties, Savannah can be a safe and stimulating base for career options and career growth in the new millennium. Here, in this grand old Southern city on the plains by the sea you can settle down, pour a glass of sweet tea, and prepare for a good show, a good life, and a great future.
