Promote Your Local Business With A Business Blog

The business blog has experienced a boom in the last decade or so as more and more individuals turn to the Internet to get information quickly and easily.  With the increasing popularity of the Internet, businesses both large and small have begun tapping into this extraordinary resource to give them the kind of exposure they could only have dreamed of in the not too distant past.

Blogs, short for weblogs, are web pages made up of a series of posts, generally updated on a regular basis.   Taking the place of traditional print newsletters, blogs represent a very real and effective way for businesses to reach out to customers and present their product in a whole new light.

When it comes to local business, a business blog can be even more important.  It can be a way for an individual business or a group of local businesses to come together and reach out to a much broader audience.  While some small businesses may feel that blogging is beyond their scope, a local community blog might be more enticing as an opportunity to not just promote an individual business, but your entire community as well.

So why consider blogging?  There are many reasons that blogging makes sense, especially for smaller businesses, including the ability to reach a very large audience and the affordability of maintaining a blog as compared to putting together and maintaining a high gloss website.   If hiring designers and photographers and paying to train an employee in html code to update a website is beyond your scope, why not consider blogging instead?

A business blog can be even more fiscally smart and less time consuming if it is undertaken as a community effort.  With a group of local businesses all participating, the expense and work can all be shared, making it much more manageable for everyone involved.

If you do decide to create a blog, there are some rules of thumb you’ll want to consider.  Remember that this is about your business, so avoid personal opinion and avoid divulging internal secrets that you don’t want the public knowing about.  Also, make sure that any customer responses to your blog are acknowledged.  Either provide answers yourself or pass them on to someone else who can do so and follow up to make sure they’ve been taken care of.

For local businesses, a business blog is about more than just individual company offerings, it’s also about drawing potential customers to your area.  You’ll want to make sure that all the businesses participating in your blog are on the same page, presenting the same general message about the community while also representing their individual business.  Remember, this isn’t strict public relations material, blogging is all about maintaining the personal touch.  It should always read as one individual speaking to another, in a friendly and polite manner.

With the advent of the Internet, we’re all living in a very small world and it’s never been easier to reach out to potential customers, even if they are across the globe.  Consider the idea of creating a local community business blog to bring your little corner of the world to customers everywhere.  There’s no better way to build a business or a community, and it’s all just a few keystrokes away!
