Glorious Savannah Entertainment

There is no place like the South for entertainment and cultural events!  No place else can offer the commitment, the passion, and the fresh zest.  Whether your love is for theater, art, live festivals or music, the South has it all -- and Savannah has more than its share.

Do you love music?  Savannah has it!  A city of many traditions blending new world and old, modern and traditional, the limits on your experience are only as limited as your own imagination.  Love jazz?  Savannah is in the heart of jazz country.  Blues?   Not much bluer than Savannah blues.  Christian music of all sorts is well supported, both modern and gospel.

You can hear some of everything that you love at the Savannah Music Festival in mid-March to early April.  This Festival is a cornerstone of the local music scene, but beyond that are other festivals spread throughout much of the year.  The city is passionate enough about its music to support a professional booking agency, and you can find live performances in places like the Bayou Café (blues and rock), and Club One, offering dancing and live music, including such performers as Lady Chamblis.

The town offers more than just clubbing and restaurant shows, though.  The presence of the Savannah College of Art and Design has provided a stable resource that helps the town attract and hold a busy community of performers.  The college owns and has renovated classic theaters such as the recently renovated Trustees Theater.

Savannah also takes pride in having the oldest continuously active professional theater in the nation: the Savannah Theater. This grand theater dates back to 1818.  Damaged by fire in 1948 it was refurbished in its current classic Art Deco style.  It was renovated in 2002.  Having hosted such wildly differing individuals as John Wilkes Booth and W.C.Fields, the theater has seen the parade of American performing traditions, and continues to host live events of prestige and passion.  Jepson's Center for the Arts holds bi-weekly performances, also.

The festival scene is constant.  As well as the Music Festival there is a Shakespeare Festival in summer, a Festival of Books and Ghost Stories, and the Blue Ocean Film Festival.  The CityMarket hosts a range of events all keying off of local artists and the studios gathered together within the CityMarket building and professional community. This year, in honor of the Johnny Mercer Centennial a series of events are being held in the many squares of the historic districts of Savannah.

Then there is the coffee house scene.  Well placed on the entertainment circuit both north-south from Miami to Boston and east-west from the coast through the Big Easy and on to Texas, and with Nashville only hours away the coffee houses of Savannah are perfectly situated to take advantage of the ever-changing array of musicians, comedians, and other performers.  Regular events are scheduled throughout the year, with plenty to see and great ambiance to enjoy.

With enthusiastic, involved entrepreneurs and a supportive Chamber of Commerce, Savannah is fast becoming one of the least heralded but most delightful tourist towns in the South.  An active, lively city entering an exciting cultural renaissance, Savannah is a treat you shouldn't miss.
