Savannah churches have offered an array of opportunities for residents and visitors alike to practice their faith for over 200 years.  Since this beautiful city first sprang up alongside the Savannah River in 1733, it has been a busy hub of activity with everything from dining and entertainment to a wide range of religious institutions.   No matter what your faith, you can find a place to express it here in lovely Savannah.

Located between the river and the beautiful Atlantic coast of Georgia, Savannah offers a little something for everyone.  From museums to shops to historical sites, there is plenty to engage your interest.  One of the most beautiful parts of the city is the Historic District and central to this oldest section is the gorgeous Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

With its breathtaking twin gothic spires, the Cathedral stands out for its visual beauty as well as its spiritual outreach to members of the Roman Catholic faith.  But as noticeable as it may be, the Cathedral is really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Savannah churches.  There is truly something for everyone here, as reflected by the religious backgrounds of Savannah’s residents.

Though the Cathedral is the most prominent of the many houses of worship in Savannah, it is the Protestant faiths that make up the largest percentage of Savannah’s residents and they are represented with Lutheran, Methodist, Pentecostal and Episcopal churches, spread throughout the city limits.

The Baptist faith is also well represented with no fewer than a dozen Baptist churches reaching to almost every section of the city.   In fact, the oldest of the Savannah churches is the First African Baptist Church, located on Montgomery Street in the Historic District.  Founded in the 1770’s, this exceptional church hosts a number of seasonal events and includes beautiful architecture and exquisite stained-glass windows.

No matter what your religious affiliation, you’ll find a place of worship in Savannah.  With a population that includes members of nearly every faith including Catholic, Baptist, Jewish, Muslim and Mormon worshippers, Savannah is truly multi-denominational and welcoming to all.

In fact, visitors are always welcome at the many Savannah churches, so don’t hesitate to stop by for services during your vacation.  And if you’re considering a place to live and spiritual guidance is important to you, you won’t be able to find a more diverse and substantial spiritual community anywhere else in the deep south.

Whether you’re considering moving here or just coming for a visit, Savannah is the place to go.  Encompassing modern convenience and historic atmosphere, Savannah truly has it all and nowhere is that reflected better than through its many houses of worship.  When it comes to religious diversity, there is no place like Savannah!

Savannah is Georgia's oldest city; it was founded by James Oglethorpe in 1733 and served as the colonial seat of government. During the American Revolution the British took Savannah on Dec. 29, 1778, and held it until July, 1782. A land-sea force of French and Americans tried to retake the city in 1779, first by siege and then by direct assault (on Oct. 9), but failed dismally. Savannah was the state capital from 1782 to 1785. With the growth of trade, and especially after the invention of the cotton gin and the construction of railroads extending to the cotton fields of central Georgia, the city became a rival of Charleston as a commercial center. The first steamship to cross the Atlantic, the Savannah, sailed from there to Liverpool in 1819. In the Civil War, Fort Pulaski, on an island near the mouth of the Savannah River, was captured by Federals in 1862, but the city did not fall until Dec. 21, 1864, when Sherman entered.
